Students at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Elementary School were on a mission to make sure that needy families in the community had healthy food on the table this Thanksgiving.
Student council members took a lead role in organizing the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive for Mission Services, a social service agency that provides 1,000 food hampers to people living at or below the poverty level. The student-led ad campaign targeted much needed items on the agency’s ‘grocery list’ such as low-sugar cereals, canned vegetables and legumes, peanut-free granola bars, hygiene products, baby formula and diapers.
Commending students for their efforts, Principal Catherine VanBalkom said not only was the response tremendous, but the campaign was very effective in encouraging classes to think about the needs of others.
“We will continue to give our students more opportunities to become Catholic leaders,” she added.
