Catholic Education Week kicks off with system-wide Mass

Students and staff participate in live streamed masses

Catholic Education Week (May 2-7, 2021) will kick off in the HWCDSB with a Catholic Education Week Opening Liturgy celebrated by His Excellency, Bishop Crosby.

The mass will be live streamed from St. Ann’s Parish on Monday, May 3, 2021 at 10:00am. Click here to access the live-streamed Mass.

A province-wide Mass for Catholic Education Week, celebrated by His Eminence, Thomas Cardinal Collins, will follow on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 11:00am. All students, families, board staff, trustees and the broader Catholic community are invited to participate “virtually” in this celebration of the Eucharist. Click here to access the videotaped Mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral.

Catholic Education Week is traditionally held during the first week of May and is a time during which we give thanks for and celebrate the ongoing gift of publicly funded Catholic education in Ontario.

This year’s theme, “Catholic Education: Nurturing Hope” and its scriptural inspiration, “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31) are especially apt in the face of the ongoing reality of the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenges to personal and spiritual well-being posed by the uncertainty and physical isolation of the current global crisis make the timing and the concerns of Mental Health Week, which takes place during the same week as Catholic Education Week, all the more relevant.

There are five sub-themes, one for each day of Catholic Education Week, aimed at helping staff and students to reflect more fully on what Nurturing Hope means to them:
• Day 1: Preparing the Earth
• Day 2: Sowing Seeds of Gratitude
• Day 3: Cultivating Relationships
• Day 4: Harvesting New Fruit
• Day 5: Marvelling in Wonder

Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at all grade levels, including prayer celebrations and service activities.
